Supporting organisations to be more inclusive with people with a disability

Hi, My name is Leon Zheng, I’m a social work student at RMIT doing my placement at Volunteering Victoria. It’s been great working within the volunteering sector and learning so much about the hard work that goes into supporting and managing volunteers.

With the National Disability Insurance Scheme continuing its rollout throughout the state, Volunteering Victoria is supporting the volunteering sector through the transition. As we adapt to the reforms, I believe we can be doing more as an inclusive community to increase pathways of participation in for people with an intellectual and/or physical disability.

According to the 2016 Census, 106,485 Victorians with a profound disability volunteer and we expect this to increase. We are currently developing resources designed to assist people with a disability through the volunteering lifecycle. We are seeking feedback on what would be helpful to include in our guidelines. Are there any questions we could help to answer? Are there tips you wish other people knew? Are there existing resources that are publically available that you would recommend? What challenges do you or your friends or family face in relation to volunteering with a physical and/or intellectual disability?

If you have any feedback or thoughts you would like to share, please email me at
