Volunteering Victoria last produced a State of Volunteering Report in 2020, providing a comprehensive overview of volunteering in Victoria. Safe to say much has changed since then!

In May 2024, the Victorian Government announced funding for Volunteering Victoria to lead this important research. The updated data will capture the latest trends in volunteering and help guide the future of volunteering in Victoria.

About the research
We are seeking to understand the distinct experiences of volunteers across groups and geographic regions across Victoria. This important research will influence how volunteering is resourced, managed and valued.

To deliver this project, Volunteering Victoria has commenced the following:

Randomised public survey

  • To understand current volunteering rates in Victoria and the experiences of volunteers.

Volunteer leader survey

  • Open from 21 October 2024.
  • Seeking responses from volunteer leaders, managers and coordinators.

Qualitative forums

  • 24 focus groups scheduled across Victoria, either in-person or online.
  • Community conversations to explore themes and experiences across different demographics.

Volunteer leader survey

As part of this research, Volunteering Victoria is conducting an in-depth survey of volunteer management in Victoria. This is open to all volunteer managers, coordinators, and leaders across the state, in either a paid or unpaid capacity.

If you engage volunteers at your organisation, community group, club, or charity — we want to hear from you!

Opening: Monday 21 October 2024, 9am (AEDT)

Qualitative forums

With the help of our local partners, Volunteering Victoria will also host 24 forums across metro, regional, rural Victoria and online.

We are particularly interested in understanding the distinct needs of different demographic groups, and the opportunities, barriers, challenges and levers to create a thriving, inclusive volunteering culture in Victoria.

  • In-person: 2 hours, up to 15-20 participants
  • Online: 90 minutes, up to 30 participants

The proposed schedule of forums is outlined below, including links to register (if available).
All times listed are in Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT).
