Strengthening communities in Victoria through our support and promotion of sustainable and equitable volunteering

Communities are strengthened by enabling and encouraging the widespread participation of its citizens.

People’s sense of belonging and worth grow when they are given plenty of choices and chances to make a difference to the health and vitality of their communities.

Volunteering is the widespread term for these acts of participating, contributing and giving out of one’s own free will and for no reward or remuneration.

Volunteers provide free services either informally, as individuals or in groups, or formally, by being part of not-for-profit or community organisations or projects.

Volunteering Victoria recognises that in some way, many of us serve as volunteers and that voluntary work permeates many aspects of society. Volunteering comes in different forms and affects the communities where people live and work.

Volunteering Victoria supports volunteers, volunteer managers and co-ordinators and volunteer-involving not-for-profit and community organisations within Victoria. The information and interaction from our website is one of the ways we provide this support.

This site is intended to be a useful tool for –

  • Our members
  • Individual volunteers
  • Managers and co-ordinators of volunteers
  • Community and not for-profit organisations and projects that involve volunteers
  • Those who support and promote volunteering
  • Volunteer-involving organisations (VIOs)
  • Government agencies
  • Businesses
  • General public interested in volunteering and/or becoming volunteers

Who are We Print E-mail

Volunteering Victoria is the State peak body for volunteering.

We focus on strengthening and ensuring the resilience of communities by promoting the benefits of people’s involvement and participation in community life through volunteering.

We advocate for the development of sustainable community hubs as sources of support and information for people seeking to volunteer.

We assist those involved in volunteering through our core program areas, as follows -

Advocacy

We are a member-based, not-for-profit, non-government organisation.

We are funded by the state and federal governments and we also receive private funding and donations for specific programs.

We have a small, core group of paid and voluntary staff.

A voluntary professional board of management leads the organisation’s governance.

We are one of eight state/territory members of the national peak body, Volunteering Australia.

Volunteering Victoria is one of the founding members of VA, along with the other state bodies.

Our members are volunteer-involving not-for-profit and community organisations. They represent a broad, cross-section that reflects the diversity of the sector. Commonwealth and state government departments, local governments, state peak organisations, local sports clubs and religious groups as well as those in health, arts, environment, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD), indigenous, youth, disabled, and aged care are represented in our membership base.
