Fair Work Australia: The difference between volunteers and employees in sports organisations

Volunteering Victoria frequently receives enquiries from sporting club coaches who volunteer their time in a highly formalised and regular way.

Recently we received a query from a coach who had been dismissed from a junior sporting team shortly prior to the end of the season. The individual chose to pursue the matter through Fair Work Australia, who ultimately determined that as the arrangement was voluntary in nature, they were unable to act under existing unfair dismissal laws.
